Real Wedding: Louise & Adam’s New Year’s Eve Wedding

March 8, 2022 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

Louise & Adam came to us in May 2019 to book their Wedding for New Year’s Eve 2020. Due to Covid restrictions they had to postpone until New Year’s Eve 2021, but the excitement, sheer joy and relief they both felt to finally be doing it was sensational.

“The staff at Berwick Lodge and our wedding planner Simone made the day so incredible and were honestly the absolute best. They went above and beyond what we even expected from them. It was like having additional friends there with you organising, calming and guiding you through the day. Their input meant that our bridesmaid and best man could just enjoy their experience and limited any stress and demands on them. We genuinely cannot thank them enough for how they helped us. ” – Louise & Adam

sweet couple

MEETING & PROPOSAL

Louise and Adam met in a nightclub in their early 20’s, after Louise moved to Worcester to train as a nurse. Adam was on a night out with his rugby team. What has kept them close over the last 10 years is their great friendship and sharing the same sense of humour. Adam and Louise both also have a love of adventure and travel with more plans currently in the pipeline. Lastly alongside all of this is also our mutual obsession with food!

Adam proposed to Louise on their last day of a long weekend in Valencia in 2019, it was a complete and absolute surprise as they had never planned to get married.

walking bride

EMOTIONS

For both Adam and Louise, the ceremony was very memorable and the most important element of the day. Louise said that walking down the aisle was the most incredible feeling that she could do again and again.

“The stress of the morning all fell away when I was stood waiting to walk in and see Adam. I remember feeling so elated, focused and completely ready to do it! Adam was emotional to see me and we both were just so focused on each other and what we were about to do”

CEREMONY MUSIC

They chose music by Sam Cooke and Al Green for the ceremony room with Jackie Wilson singing them out after their vows. The first dance was by a singer called Tom Baxter “Better”. It’s not a well-known song but the words are so simple and meaningful to Adam and Louise, and capture perfectly how they feel about each other.

wedding table

FLOWERS

Louise’s bouquet was a mixture of whites, plums and also black flowers. It was arranged naturally with ivy and tied with a blush ribbon. The two large urns provided by florist Wizz & Wild, were brought in from the ceremony room and placed either side of the top table which framed the top table throughout the wedding breakfast beautifully. Table centrepieces were small posies in the style of my bouquet which initially lined the aisle and then were brought in and placed on the tables.

DECORATIONS & STYLE

Place cards were printed with a green wreath/eucalyptus theme that sat in little wooden log slices.

Adam and Louise loved the style and era of the building straight away. The open fires and the lay out with the cosiness of the snugs was perfect for their guests to be able to relax and chat.  “The whole venue is so wonderfully decorated and furnished that it made us feel the space was beautiful enough already without too much decoration from us. And we loved the Christmas tree!”

CAKE

There were two cakes as a family member kindly surprised them on the day with one she had kindly made. Our wedding cake we had made by Beaus Bakehouse was a hummingbird cake which is a completely delicious pineapple and banana cake with cream cheese. The cake was decorated with two items from Etsy which were dried flowers and Mr & Mrs Green laser cut out of wood.

THREADS

Adam and his Best Man wore the same suit by Marc Darcy with his Dad and Brother in similar but plainer dark navy. “Adam chose the suit himself with some strong nudging from me! With his dark hair and eyes he looked really sharp and handsome” says Louise.

Adam’s Best Man really liked his suit and all the outfits needed minimal tailoring which was fantastic and made things so easy.

dress

THE DRESS

Louise wore a Bardot fit and flare gown by Ellis Bridal London. “It was the third dress I tried on and it was my absolute favourite. In my mind I wanted to capture in myself the feeling of old Hollywood. Also because of the ornateness of the venue and our NYE date I felt I could up the glamour and also go for a long veil. I figured you only do this once so why not!”

Louise also had an outfit change for the evening which she kept as a surprise even from Adam. “I wanted to feel free to relax and get into the party and so chose a full sequin kimono sleeve gown to see in the new year. My bridesmaid Faye helped me into it after the first dance and I came down the stairs and straight on to the dancefloor to surprise everyone”

BRIDESMAIDS

Faye, the Bridesmaid, wore a navy gown by Biba with silver shoes from Whistle’s. It was important to the couple that their wedding party also felt great and their best selves. With this in mind, the Bridesmaid chose her own gown and she felt incredible in it.

family

FAMILY FROM OVERSEAS

A video link was set up, for loved ones who could not be there due to Covid, including Louise’s brother in Australia. It was such a nice touch and they are so pleased they did it.

“Being able to see their faces on the day was wonderful and meant a lot. We had a cardboard cut out of my brother and his partner made so they could physically be there as they were stuck over in Australia. Seeing him pop up around the venue was fun and he also got involved in the photo booth!”

guitar

ENTERTAINMENT

Louise & Adam entertained their guests with a live band, magic mirror photo booth and sparklers from Berwick Lodge. The band, Lazy Marmalade, played all day and the guys were fantastic. They played acoustically whilst the guests had their reception drinks and then performed 2 live covers in the evening followed by a DJ set

“The guys were so talented and brought such a great energy with them. Our friends and family have all said since how fantastic they were.”

PHOTOGRAPHY

“We wanted to keep it fun and relaxed which is one of the reasons we chose our photographers, Steel & Oak, as they have a fun and informal style. One of the things we chose to do was a formula 1 style bubbly shake up in the garden which was so fun and really set the tone for a grown-up’s only NYE wedding!”

We’d like to say a very big thank you to Steel & Oak and Louise & Adam, for letting us share these wonderful photos.

Real Weddings: Rozanne & Joe’s Summer Wedding

October 6, 2021 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

Rozanne & Joe booked their Summer wedding with us after taking a virtual online tour of Berwick during lockdown..

“We wanted a venue that was a little bit different with plenty of character and with beautiful grounds. We particularly liked the layout of the building at Berwick as it meant we could have some outdoor time during the day for G&Ts but then have everyone together for the evening party. After a virtual tour with the team at Berwick we were sold. Everyone was going through such difficult times during the pandemic but service was always with a smile and they were flexible to our plans. The support on the day from Magdalena was great. She was very calm but very attentive and fixed the small last-minute issues for us, such as no flowers left for the cake! ” – Rozanne & Joe

Rozanne and Joe

MEETING

Rozanne & Joe met through a mutual friend in early 2019 and after finding out that Rozanne was in the process of buying a new flat, Joe used this as a good excuse to learn more about the block she was buying in. Obviously this had to happen over a drink! 9 months later they were engaged!

PROPOSAL

On the first night of their holiday in Bali in December 2019, Joe booked a private dinner in the jungle in Ubud for the two of them and totally surprised Rozanne by getting down on one knee!

father and daughter

EMOTIONS

Rozanne was mostly calm on the morning of the Wedding and although she was slightly emotional at times, both were overwhelmed with love and happiness throughout the day. Joe however, cried several times in the morning of the Wedding, throughout the ceremony and at the speeches!

When Rozanne reached Joe at the end of the aisle (pictured)  Joe’s dad burst out with ‘blimmin’ beautiful’ and made the guests laugh.

wedding flowers

FLOWERS & DECORATIONS

The flowers of choice were blush and ivory roses, fluffy pink peonies and lots of natural greenery.

Rozanne originally had all venue flowers and bouquets ordered with a florist, however, after a last-minute cancellation by the florist a month before, she decided to make the table centre pieces themselves. Rozanne sprayed painted bottles gold and she and her bridesmaid came up to fill the vases with beautiful roses and peonies the day before. Fortunately, Sarah Tynan Flowers in Portishead came to the rescue at short notice and organised stunning bouquets and buttonholes for the wedding party.

Decorations around the venue comprised of more flowers in the beautiful gold bottles and a very personal touch was 3D Mr and Mrs letters that Joe’s 10 year old son Alfie made for them.

Table numbers and names were printed in gold and a large ‘Finally married’ sign was displayed, adorned with more flowers.

Ivory/Blush/Navy

TABLE PLAN

Rozanne & Joe were keen to have fun on the top table so rather than going with tradition, they shared the top table with the Bridesmaids, Best Man and Joe’s sons, Alfie & Billy. A large table of friends sat on the table next to them and the fun began!

CAKE

A stunning 3 tier semi-naked cake by Cake Fest stole the show! Each tier was a different flavour – chocolate, lemon and lime & coconut – and it was simply delicious.

FAVOURS

If there’s one thing the couple’s friends love it’s a drink! Tequila Rosé was the shot of choice on Rozanne’s hen party and the fact that it’s pink meant it tied in perfectly with the colour scheme too.

ENTERTAINMENT

Cheese was most certainly not on the playlist for these two. Brad Francis the DJ played old school RnB, garage and chart music on the night, everyone loved it and were on the dance floor until late.

A Magician and Magic Mirror kept guests entertained.

Joe threads

THREADS

Joe, his Groomsmen, both dads and Joe’s sons all wore 3 piece navy suits with matching pocket squares and ties. Joe’s grey waistcoat made him stand out from the others, who wore a navy waistcoat.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Their images by Neil Williams Photography capture the spirit and love of the day absolutely perfectly. Neil’s wife was part of the photography team on the day and they were both brilliant! You can see more of Neil’s images below in the gallery.

STANDOUT MOMENTS

Caught up in the high sprits of the day (or maybe it was the  Tequila Rosé), Joe managed to miss out any mention of Rozanne in his speech! He’d dropped the 2 pages with his prepared speech about Rozanne but more than made up for it with a second speech, all about her. The speeches were beautiful and very funny.

Joe’s cousin have the couple a small plot of land and made them into a Lord and Lady!

The party in the evening had such a brilliant atmosphere!

wedding dress

THE DRESS

Rozanne’s satin ivory Enzoani dress had a full skirt, pockets and a huge, wonky bow on the back. She wanted a traditional dress with a modern take and this is exactly what she chose. Having tried on 21 dresses at The White Collection in Portishead, Rozanne tried ‘the one’ on last and that was it, decision made!

BRIDESMAIDS

The bridesmaid dresses were high neck, pleated blush affairs, with enough room to cover a six month bump. From ASOS.

Tips For An Eco-Friendly Wedding

July 13, 2021 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

With a million things to think about when it comes to planning your dream wedding, trying to ensure you aren’t putting too much strain on the environment at the same time, can be tricky. Weddings produce a lot of carbon footprint, so we’ve put together a few eco-friendly ideas to make your wedding day more sustainable.

Wedding planning app, Bridebook, tell us that 10% of couples in the UK considered climate change when planning their wedding in 2019, a figure that appears to be rising year on year.

Whilst an eco-friendly wedding is desirable, it’s important to understand that your wedding can’t be completely carbon-free (yet!) but you can make a few changes to help along the way….

The Venue

You’ve been dreaming of this day for as long as you can remember and now it’s time to decide on the venue. It’s important to choose a venue that cares about their environmental impact.

Many venues are more aware of the impact weddings have on the environment and have their own stories of how they are trying to make small changes for their eco-friendly couples. At Berwick Lodge, we try to strike a balance between encouraging eco-conscious decisions whilst ensuring our couples’ personalities shine through with their own little personal touches.

wedding venue

Tree Planting
To offset some of the wedding’s carbon footprint, could your venue plant a tree in their grounds? A wonderful way to leave a lasting memory of your wedding and give back to nature.

Wedding Decorations & Flowers
We suggest hiring your decorations, to save on plastic wastage. And using locally picked wildflowers as centrepieces for your tables is a lovely, natural touch. Some florists only use blooms from local picking sites, of which there are a few in Bristol.

bouquet

One eco wedding favour suggestion is ‘Bee bombs’- the seedball can be sown in the guests’ own gardens, growing wildflowers focused on “bringing the bees back.” They are based on an ancient method of farming that is less destructive to wildlife and are handmade in Dorset. Each pack contains a mixture of seeds and species of wildflowers, which are mixed with clay powder and soil to protect the seeds whilst they germinate.

Transport
It’s your special day and of course you want all your loved ones there to support you. However, it is important to think about effect traveling to your wedding will have on the environment.

Live streaming of your wedding ceremony is very useful to those who would need to travel long distances, so it will help offset some of the carbon footprint and it helps to satisfy any Covid-19 limitations.

For guests attending in real life, we suggest providing a bus or shuttle service that can pick up all the guests to take them to the wedding which will reduce the amount of petrol used. Similarly, you can suggest the option to carpool and even better if they are electric cars!

The Wedding Dress
The most important decision a bride can make is what they will wear! And of course, the best thing you can do for the environment is to go for a pre-loved wedding dress. You could share the love from those before and help the environment at the same time. Preloved or Bridal Reloved are both websites that sell beautiful, preloved gowns.

Food and Drink

Seasonal and Local Ingredients
We all know that choosing seasonal ingredients makes for a more ethical meal. So when it comes to deciding on the menu, sourcing seasonal and local products not only tastes amazing but you can reduce transport pollution and help give back to the local community. Some venues, like us, grow their own herbs on site and source beef from the farm next door.

Wines
The reputation for English wines is much better than it used to be and every town now seems to make its own local gin. Choosing these options not only reduces mileage, it supports independent business who could definitely do with a boost in their sales after a difficult year of little trading. Our house wine at Berwick is ‘Three Choirs’ from a vineyard in Gloucestershire.

wines

Soft Drinks
The same can apply to soft drinks. For example, at Berwick we send apples that fall from the trees in our orchard to not-for-profit company in Gloucestershire, Trust Juice. Trust’s ethos is that juice should stay natural so it’s pressed and pasteurised with nothing added to it, bottled by another Gloucestershire independent business, Bushel & Peck, and available to buy and serve at your wedding. Berwick apple juice prevents waste, supports the community (Gloucestershire college students help press the apples with Trust Juice) and keeps the carbon footprint down.

Surplus Food
The geniuses at Too Good to Go have created an app that gives consumers the opportunity to buy surplus food from local restaurants or cafes before its use by date, to prevent food waste. An astonishing amount of food is wasted every day and weddings can be guilty of contributing to this. Another option is to arrange for any surplus wedding food to be donated to a local food bank. See if your venue, like us, is signed up to Too Good To Go, and know that your surplus food won’t go to waste.

I hope that these ideas have given you a little food for thought when it comes to planning certain aspects of your wedding. If you have any other ethical wedding ideas we’d love to hear them!

Real Weddings: Clare & Natalie’s Elopement

October 8, 2020 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

Clare and Natalie contacted us during lockdown to enquire about eloping in September 2020.

““We always dreamed that our wedding day would be intimate and cosy… Covid gave us a great excuse to achieve that by eloping! We wanted a venue with plenty of character, beautiful gardens and scrummy food.. a quick search on Google for elopement weddings during lockdown found us this gem of a place!”

Claire & Natalie

THE ENGAGEMENT

Clare & Natalie met at school in the mid naughties. They remained close throughout school and university but eventually realised their feelings were deeper than just friends! Little did they think back then that they would end up marrying each other!

Natalie tells us “Clare was the one to actually propose even though we’d openly chatted about it. The day started with a mystery trip out whereby we visited various places in which we’d lived together with the final stop being outside the school gates where we’d first met.”

The girls were engaged for just over a year before they decided to elope..

Claire & Natalie

CHOOSING AN ELOPEMENT

“The simplicity of eloping was so appealing to us and the elopement package at Berwick Lodge included everything we wanted, making it stress free! Our wedding coordinator Simone made the process so easy and the whole day ran seamlessly. We didn’t have to think of anything, leaving us to simply enjoy every part of the day. The only worry was the chance of the registrar going down with coronavirus!”

One of Clare & Natalie’s highlights was the food “What’s not to love about a six course tasting menu? Each course was simply fantastic (not only to eat, but also to look at!) and the chef created a delicious vegetarian menu which was simply perfect for our wedding day… especially as we didn’t need to fit into our dresses again afterwards!”

wedding dress

THE DRESSES

“We always knew we weren’t going to go for traditional white wedding dresses so hitting the high street was perfect for us. Turns out we were spoilt for choice so would definitely recommend to others!”

TOP TIP

We asked the girls what tip they would offer other couples organising an elopement wedding.

“Remind yourselves that it is all about just the two of you. We found it easiest by focusing solely on us and choosing things important to us. Local suppliers were great as it was easy and quicker to make decisions. One big tip – choose an elopement package at Berwick Lodge!”

PHOTOGRAPHY

The gardens were another reason the girls chose Berwick. “They simply provided such beautiful backdrops for our photographs.” Clare & Natalie used their own photographer, Christy Blanch, to capture moments on their special day. “We absolutely love the photos by Christy! We are so pleased with them, they are amazing!”

Real Weddings: Neil & Matt’s November Wedding

February 25, 2020 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

Neil & Matt booked their November wedding with us after attending our venue showcase 11 months earlier..

“We wanted a venue that would work with us on creating a unique wedding day; one that we could
personalise and tailor. We also wanted great food, a warm and friendly atmosphere, and above all, fantastic
service. For us, Berwick Lodge completely fulfilled that brief … and more! Simone and the team worked with
us to create a completely bespoke day. No detail was overlooked and for us, it was truly magical.” – Matt & Neil

couple ring

MEETING

Neil & Matt got together in 2003 when they were both in their early 20s and eventually (!) got engaged in 2018. Despite the constant hints by Neil, the eventual proposal by Matt was a complete surprise.

PROPOSAL

For Christmas they were in the Japanese Alps. And it was here, on Christmas Day morning that Matt proposed. It wasn’t a traditional proposal either; Matt had designed an augmented reality Christmas Card which he gave Neil on Christmas Day morning. When Neil opened the card he thought it was a very personal Christmas card, but it wasn’t until he placed his mobile phone over the card, that the card then came to life on his mobile phone. The song, Only You, by The Flying Picketts started playing, and the animation commenced and it concluded with the “question”. There were tears and laughter, and it was truly unique and romantic.

kissing couple

EMOTIONS

The guys were both nervous, but excited at the start of the day. The ceremony was conducted by a friend, who is a registrar, making it very personable and emotional. Matt & Neil kept the ceremony to 16 guests (immediate family and close friends) so this and the Berwick environment, created a very intimate atmosphere. Everyone shed a tear. Throughout the day they both had such an elated feeling of love and happiness and it was so amazing that this was felt by all of their guests..

STANDOUT MOMENTS

For Neil & Matt, there were two ‘standout’ aspects to their wedding; the ceremony and vows, and secondly the love, laughter and entertainment of their wedding celebrations with Lady Diamond (more about her in a bit!) They tell us that those who went above and beyond for them was Berwick Lodge, Sherbert Bloom and Lady Diamond.

wedding flower decoration

FLOWERS & DECORATIONS

The flowers by Sherbert Bloom were simply amazing! Roberta, the florist got the right mix of colour, texture and style – Craspedia (little yellow balls), Eryngium (blue thistles), Eucalyptus Populus and Freesias (Neil’s mum’s favourite) to name just a few – completely surpassing the couples’ expectations.

The tables were named after places or locations that had special meaning or memories to Matt and Neil. Each table name had an accompanying story and picture on them, and were arranged to mean something to at least one or two of these guests on that respective table. It proved to be an interesting and fun talking point for each table!

As the boys are both Welsh, they opted for Welsh Cakes as favours and had them specially made in White Chocolate and Cranberry flavours.

wedding cake

TABLE PLAN

Neil and Matt wanted to mix with as many of their guests as possible and so they decided they would move table for each course. This was all accommodated with ease by the team at Berwick Lodge, and it enabled them to eat with many of their guests during the Wedding Breakfast.

CAKE

A stunning 3 tier contemporary cake, in midnight blue, designed and made by Zaza Marcelle was the star of the show. Each tier was a different flavour and it was simply delicious!

threads

THREADS

Matt and Neil had bespoke suits made for them by Clifton Suits, specifically for the day. Matt’s suit was blue, whilst Neil’s was light grey.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Their images by Mark Leonard Photography capture the spirit and love of the day, absolutely perfectly. You can see more of Mark’s images below in the gallery.

HONEYMOON

A romantic mini-moon to The Scarlett Hotel in Cornwall happened for a few days after the wedding before Matt & Neil’s honeymoon a few months later – an idyllic three weeks in the Maldives.

entertainment

ENTERTAINMENT

Berwick Lodge’s resident pianist Travis Glover played during the wedding ceremony and post ceremony
drinks and canapés.

Neil & Matt didn’t have traditional speeches so when the wedding breakfast was finished, a drag performer, Lady Diamond, entertained the guests with comedy and songs. This was a complete surprise to all the guests, who then joined in singing along to songs and serenading the grooms. After a delicious wedding breakfast and associated wine, Lady Diamond did an absolutely fabulous set that completely lifted the energy and love and made for a truly memorable evening.

Lady Diamond is a legend, and every guest wanted to come back the following weekend for a replay
