Nestled just minutes from Bristol’s vibrant city centre, Berwick Lodge offers one of the region’s most elegant afternoon tea experiences. Set in a historic manor house surrounded by gardens and a water fountain, it’s a destination that feels both grand and intimate – a perfect escape for those seeking a traditional English tea with a touch of opulence.

The Timeless Charm of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea was first introduced in the 1840s by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who found herself growing hungry in the long hours between lunch and dinner. What began as a private indulgence quickly blossomed into a fashionable social event among England’s high society. Today, afternoon tea remains a treasured ritual, celebrated for its ability to bring people together over fine teas and exquisite bites.

Spring Wedding Tips for a Picture-Perfect Day at Berwick Lodge

June 9, 2025 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

A spring wedding at Berwick Lodge could be exactly what you’re looking for this Spring.

Our 18-acre grounds burst with seasonal blooms from March through May, while our historic manor house provides elegant shelter from unpredictable weather. We’ll share with you some of the tips we’ve picked up when planning a Spring Wedding, and why our venue is best suited.

Key Takeaways

  • Weatherproof ceremony spaces indoors
  • Award-winning seasonal menus
  • Exclusive use of manor and grounds
  • Dedicated wedding coordinators
  • Accommodation for up to 27 guests

Choosing Your Perfect Spring Venue

Your venue choice directly impacts every aspect of a spring wedding. At Berwick Lodge, our exclusive wedding venue has both stunning outdoor ceremony spaces and elegant indoor options. Our natural gardens showcase spring’s beauty, whilst our manor house features large windows that flood rooms with natural light.

What sets us apart for spring celebrations:

  • Exclusive use of the entire property
  • Seamless indoor-outdoor flow
  • Historic architecture with modern amenities
  • Panoramic views across to Wales
  • On-site accommodation for your closest guests

Modern couples increasingly seek sustainable wedding options, and spring at Berwick Lodge offers plenty. Our kitchen works closely with local suppliers, reducing food miles while supporting West Country producers. Electric car charging points are available in the car park for a charge. Details can be found on our Sustainability Page.

Planning for Spring Weather

Spring weather requires smart contingency planning. We’ve hosted hundreds of spring weddings and know exactly how to handle Britain’s changeable climate. Our spaces transition smoothly from outdoor celebrations to indoor comfort, often incorporating both throughout your day.

Our spring weather strategy includes:

  • A Stretch Tent for up to 100 guests (however, you may need to hire your own marquee for up to 200 guests in early spring)
  • Elegant indoor backup options
  • Dedicated coordinator monitoring forecasts
  • Climate-controlled reception rooms

Seasonal Style & Décor

Our grounds and ancient Berwick Woodlands with blankets of bluebells naturally provide the perfect backdrop, with flowering Cherry trees, Wisteria and even a garden full of fresh blooms setting the scene.

Work with nature’s palette by incorporating seasonal British flowers from local suppliers into your table settings and ceremony space. One of our recommended suppliers is Heart of BS13 – a charitable organisation that not only supplies beautiful blooms for every occasion from their own farm, but also takes action to improve the environment, tackle food insecurity and create jobs in Hartcliffe and Withywood.

Our experienced team can guide you towards simple, effective styling choices that enhance our spaces without overwhelming them. We’ve seen how garden-inspired tablescapes and sustainable décor options create stunning effects while keeping costs sensible.

Many couples find they need minimal ceremony decoration, letting our historic architecture and seasonal gardens speak for themselves.

Creating Your Spring Feast

Spring offers some of Britain’s finest seasonal ingredients, and our 2-rosette kitchen knows exactly how to showcase them. We design our menus around local, seasonal produce, ensuring your wedding breakfast captures the essence of springtime in the West Country.

Start with delicate English asparagus or fresh pea soup, moving to succulent local lamb or line-caught fish for the main course. Our desserts celebrate spring’s bounty with seasonal berries and local cream.

Even our cocktails embrace the season, with garden herb-infused drinks and elegant springtime aperitifs. We’re particularly proud of our cheese selection, which pairs perfectly with local chutneys and honey.

Capturing Perfect Spring Photos

Spring light at Berwick Lodge creates magical photo opportunities throughout your day. We’ll help you plan your timeline to capture the best moments, whether you’re seeking golden hour portraits or bright morning ceremony shots.

Our historic manor façade provide stunning backdrops in the day light for group images and our garden offers intimate settings for couple portraits, whilst our light-filled drawing rooms provide elegant indoor options if the weather turns.

We’ve worked with many photographers over the years and can recommend professionals who know our grounds intimately and understand how to capture spring’s natural beauty at its best.

The Story So Far: The Heart Behind Berwick Lodge

June 9, 2025 by Laura Lewis Leave a Comment

Meet Sarah Arikan – Owner and Hotel Manager – and become a part of the exciting story behind an award-winning country house hotel, restaurant and events venue.

To create a good story, you need an exciting beginning and a happy ending with an engaging storyline in between. For Sarah and Fevzi Arikan, their story is still being written as they continue to embark on exciting new chapters in their life at their award-winning country hotel, Berwick Lodge.

An Unexpected Beginning

Their story so far has been an interesting one; they didn’t dream a dream of owning one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the South West, or that people would come from far and wide to dine in their 2 AA Rosette fine dining restaurant. Instead, they were living a busy life in Norway, running after three boisterous children whilst embarking on an everlasting love story of their own.

A Valentine’s Day Twist of Fate

It was upon their return home to the UK that the first chapter was written. Fevzi, who is originally from Turkey, grew hungry for a project that allowed him to indulge in his passions and skills in their new life in England.

It just so happened that one evening in 2003—coincidentally Valentine’s Day—they stumbled upon a property in the local paper. And the rest, you can say, is history. And so the story began…

Building a Home with Heart

Just over five years later, the love of two cultures has been blended together to design and build a ‘home from home’ for guests at Berwick Lodge. Both Sarah and Fevzi have poured time, effort, and investment into making Berwick Lodge everything they envisaged it to be.

Fevzi became a builder practically overnight and even learnt carpentry to make 26 bespoke doors—crafted with privacy and exclusivity in mind. He also designed all the interiors and continues to make improvements today, handling everything from painting to brick-laying across the grounds.

All of this is beautifully complemented by Sarah, whose creative flair—and fabulous collection of vibrant Doc Martens—often earns an admiring comment or two from guests.

A Unique Fusion of Cultures

With a collection of beautiful rooms and living spaces, luxury and comfort have been combined throughout. British culture has been elegantly merged with Turkish influences through a thoughtful display of fabrics and furniture.

About Our Location at Berwick Lodge

From artifacts brought over from Istanbul to artwork passed down from Sarah’s grandmother, it’s the small, personal touches that give Berwick Lodge its warm and homely ambiance.

Your Story Starts Here

Begin your journey on the long, sweeping drive to Berwick Lodge and create an everlasting love story of your own during a magical experience in a place that is truly unique.
